Mechanochemical reaction of DDT with calcium oxide. [2,2,-bis(4-chlorophenyl)1,1,1-trichloroethane]
Article Abstract:
Reaction of DDT [2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)1,1,1-trichloroethane] with calcium oxide was analyzed by ball-milling mechanochemistry. The exothermnic reaction between DDT and Cao produced a grayish liquid composed of an aromatic compound with a high molecular weight. The aromatic compound contains one chlorine atom and six oxygen atoms for every 35 carbon atoms. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis of the product indicates the efficient mechanochemical destruction of DDT.

On the chain gang
Article Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers has replaced the carbon steel roller gate chains of the Byrd Locks and Dam with a giant chain made of two dissimilar metals. The original chains had to be changed because corrosion has made movement between the links and pins under water very difficult. The collars, roller pins, spacers and washers of the new chain were constructed from Custom 450 stainless steel and the end links and link bars were made of aluminum.

Polymerase chain reaction
Article Abstract:
A discovery by Kary Mullis, a chemist at Cetus Corp, has led to the utilization of a process called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by which genetic samples can be reproduced in almost infinite amounts. PCR, for example, would allow the duplication of Abraham Lincoln's DNA.
